MESSAGE SUMMARY:
During this week’s Wednesday evening’s service, Rev. Beci Rohkohl explored how to live beautifully in a world where change and uncertainty are unavoidable.
Drawing from Pema Chödrön’s “Living Beautifully with Uncertainty and Change,” Rev. Beci pointed out that much of our suffering comes not from change itself, but from our resistance to it—our desire to cling to familiar routines, beliefs and plans, and to our expectations about how life should unfold.
Spiritual freedom begins when we loosen our grip on the need for certainty and control, accept life as it is, and trust that the presence of God within us will guide and sustain us through whatever changes come.
Three practices help us navigate uncertainty: staying present; remaining grounded but flexible; and keeping our hearts open. Together, they help us move through change with greater acceptance, resilience and grace.
We are also called to bring greater consciousness to our thoughts, words and actions: do no harm, practice mindfulness, make ethical choices, pray and meditate, and express compassion through service. Spiritual truth isn’t simply something we know—it is something we must live.
Finally, we are challenged to “live without the storyline.” We often take what happens and immediately create stories about what it means: “This always happens to me.” “I’m failing.” “They don’t respect me.” Instead, we can pause and experience the moment before deciding what it means or assigning it a label.
Ultimately, living beautifully means releasing our need to know or control what comes next; letting go of the stories that keep us stuck; and stepping into life with courage, curiosity, compassion and an open heart.
