During this week’s Wednesday evening service, Rev. Stacy Macris Ros reminded us that prayer is not about asking God to change our circumstances. Rather, it’s about awakening to the Divine Presence already within us and allowing that awareness to transform our lives.

Because we are expressions of God, we pray from a consciousness of oneness rather than separation. A simple prayer structure is:
God is ____.
So I am _____.
Therefore, I can _____.

For example: “God is love. So I am love. Therefore, I can be a loving presence and bring harmony into this relationship.” We can pray this way because love is our true spiritual nature. And as we affirm that truth, the affirmation itself becomes the prayer.

Our words and thoughts have creative power. Whatever we consistently affirm shapes the way we experience life. By claiming spiritual qualities such as love, peace, wisdom, strength and life as our own, we move beyond fear and limitation and begin expressing our highest selves. Prayer is completed not only through our words, but by living those qualities each day—allowing our lives to become living prayers.

Unity’s five-step prayer process provides a practical path for deepening this awareness:

RELAX: Release tension and become present through the breath.

FOCUS: Direct your attention toward a divine quality or affirmation, such as peace, love or wisdom.

MEDITATE: Enter the silence, gently returning your awareness to your breath and word/affirmation whenever the mind wanders.

REALIZE: Know that the qualities you seek already exist within you because you are one with God.

GRATITUDE: End every prayer with thanks, trusting that divine good is already unfolding—even before your eyes can see it or your ears can hear it.

The power to heal, grow and transform our lives has never been somewhere “out there.” It has always been within us. Each time we pray from that awareness, we awaken more fully to the divine life already expressing through us. As our consciousness changes, our experience of life changes—and that is the true power of affirmative prayer.
