Momentum Needs a Little Motivation.

By Linda Depke
Youth Education Director

Linda DepkeMotivation is the incentive to do or accomplish something. Motivation typically takes two different forms. Intrinsic motivation comes from inside, and is based on a feeling of safety and belonging. Outside motivation comes from reward or fear of punishment. Both stimulate movement, but with very different results. Momentum is also a force or strength that creates movement. But once unleased, momentum will keep growing. When momentum is unguided — much like the snowball effect — it can turn into an avalanche.

We believe that positive motivation is the catalyst that can effectively guide and move the momentum of a group and give it dignity, meaning and lasting results. The beauty of children and teens is that they are naturally wired to change and accomplish things ... which is why we believe it isn’t necessary to use reward or fear to motivate them. Our children and teens — like all of us — are much more motivated by creative communities that focus on what is right ... not who is right, or what you will get if you are.

Our youth classes are exactly that: creative communities that provide meaningful connections for our children and teens by linking into their interests, passions and needs. That, in turn, encourages positive motion, creates excitement, and keeps the momentum going in a purposeful and empowering way.
