What is a Licensed Unity Teacher?
Licensed Unity Teachers, or “LUT’s” as they’re most often called, serve their member ministries in various teaching and pastoral care roles. In this article, you’ll be introduced to the role of LUT’s within Unity communities, and the commitment it takes for them to achieve their goal of becoming licensed.
The concept of spiritual growth—that we can grow spiritually by using certain principles to change our thinking and improve our circumstances—is central to the teachings of Unity. The founders of Unity, Charles and Myrtle Fillmore, considered themselves teachers of spiritual principles, rather than ministers. They invited people into their home to study and discuss the scriptures, sing hymns and pray. Together, they all learned to practice the teachings of Jesus Christ in everyday life. This teaching tradition carries on today, in the training and licensing of our Teachers. These dedicated people spend many years immersing themselves in the study of Unity, with class topics ranging from the Movement’s history to those on experiencing the Christ within.
The primary purpose of the Teacher program is for students to deepen their own spiritual journeys. The program usually takes students several years to complete as it includes accredited classes, written assignments, volunteering and educational intensives held at Unity Village. All of these requirements give students oppor-tunities to expand consciousness, release old, limiting beliefs and “live” Unity principles more deeply.
In addition to the commitment to their own spiritual growth, LUT’s may serve in their ministries in various capacities. Depending on the needs of the ministry, and at the discretion of the Lead Minister, Teachers may teach classes, serve Communion or officiate at christenings, weddings and funerals.
Becoming a Licensed Unity Teacher takes many years to complete, a deep personal commitment to one’s own growth and a desire to serve the needs of one’s church community. The next time you attend a class or a service facilitated by one of our LUT’s, let them know you appreciate their commitment.
Spiritual Education and Enrichment (SEE)
By Chris Kennedy, Ministerial Associate
Question: What is an “SEE” Class?
Answer: SEE stands for Spiritual Education and Enrichment, a series
of classes with curricula designed and set through Unity Village
(home of the Unity movement). Paraphrasing from SEE literature, “SEE provides educational opportunities for people who are seeking
practical principles to live more joyously and successfully. SEE is
devoted to helping all people bring a consciousness of the activity of
God into every life situation. SEE classes seek to help individuals
fully express their God-given potentials.”
Q: Who teaches SEE classes?
A: They are taught only by Unity Ministers, Licensed Unity Teachers
or approved Students pursuing these paths.
Q: Why take an SEE class?
A: Many people take these classes strictly for personal growth
purposes and never seek credit for them. Others take them as part of
the Spiritual Development Program, which requires the completion of
250 credit hours ... hence the statement, “This class can be taken for
SEE credit.” An individuals seeking to become a Licensed Unity
Teacher or a Unity Minister are also required to take these courses to
meet prerequisite requirements.
From a personal perspective, I will share that it was through SEE classes that I gained my greatest understanding of Unity’s teachings and some of my greatest spiritual growth. I started taking SEE classes because I thought they sounded interesting; I continued taking them, not only to fulfill pre-requisite requirements for ministerial school, but because I was learning and growing through them in amazing ways. In short, I completed the Spiritual Development Program, not because I had to, but because I wanted to. I invite you to explore these classes and find out if they are as powerful an agent of discovery for you as they have been for me and many others.
Q: Where can I take SEE classes?
A: It used to be that most people took these classes during powerful
one-week sessions at Unity Village in Lees Summit, Missouri. They
can still be taken at Unity Village, and I highly recommend that
option for those interested in really immersing themselves in an
incredible setting among people gathered for the purpose of spiritual
growth.
For those not interested or able to go to the Village, SEE classes can
now also be taken:
- At Unity of Phoenix and other Unity churches around the Valley
- At Rev. Sandy Kale’s Inspirational Unity in Scottsdale, an alternative ministry that is educational in nature (www.inspirationalunitychurch.com)
- At Rev. Flo Dibblee’s Center of the Living Light Unity in Phoenix, another alternative ministry(www.cotllunity.org)
- As an online course at www.unity.org (Go to Education and SEE, see links above) If you would like more information, please feel free to contact me at 602.978.3200, Ext. 299, or ckennedy@unityphx.org.
